Volleyball Upset Bid Falls Short Against LMU

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University (4-18, 2-6 WCC) volleyball team fell short in its attempt to end a 19-match losing skid to West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount on Friday night at Martin Centre. LMU (14-7, 5-3 WCC) rallied for a 3-1 victory after losing the opening game of the contest. The Lions posted a 26-30, 30-21, 30-23, 38-36 win.
The Bulldogs opened with a determined effort in game one out-hitting LMU, 20-8, as the Bulldogs won their first game from LMU since the 1998 season. Abby Cullen connected on six kills including three on Gonzaga's last six points as GU hit 24 percent in the opener.
Loyola Marymount rebounded in the second game with a 16-10 kill advantage. Kristen Gallup and Kealani Kimball combined to serve the Lions to a quick 21-10 advantage. The balanced Lions attack featured several kills from Tiana Newsome and Gallup.
Gonzaga marched out to an early lead in game three as Christina Davis hammered home three early kills to spark the Bulldogs to a 14-9 lead. Loyola Marymount responded with two kills by Roxanne Orsini and back-to-back kills by Gallup and Jody Carlson won game three for the Lions.
Game four domination flip-flopped between the two schools with LMU running out to an early 9-5 lead with two Gallup kills. The Bulldogs inched back into the match with kills by Davis and Cullen, taking a 22-21 lead. The two schools traded attacks with Gonzaga having six game winning chances and LMU having five. In the end the Lions were able to make the most of their opportunities with two late kills by Gallup and a Gonzaga attacking error.
Gallup led all players with 20 kills while Kimball finished with 13 for LMU. Tiana Newsome dominated play at the net with 16 blocks, 13 assisted.
Christina Davis led the Bulldogs with 19 kills while Cullen finished with 17. Natasha Kozen had 14 kills on a 33 percent attacking night.
