Women's Basketball Drops First Game To Ducks 83-72

EUGENE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team (0-1) opened the regular season on the road Friday night with a 83-72 non-conference loss to the University of Oregon Ducks (1-0).
The defending 2002 WNIT champion Ducks sank eight unanswered points during the first four minutes of play before the Bulldogs put up their first points on a tip-in by Shannon Mathews. Mathews contributed 15 of the Bulldogs' 28 first-half points.
Gonzaga continued to trail by as many as 18 points in the first half before they went to the locker room with a 40-28 deficit.
The Ducks dominated the second half, establishing a 17-point lead with 5:29 left. Gonzaga shaved Oregon's' lead to a mere eight points with less than two minutes remaining.
Four Oregon players put away double-digits as Catherine Kraayeveld hit a double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Mathews paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 24 points, going 4-for-10 from behind the three-point line. Ashley Burke scored 10 points and a team-high six rebounds while freshman Anne Bailey sank 16 points and pulled down four rebounds.
Gonzaga shot 44.4 percent on the night as Oregon finished shooting 47.5 percent.
The Bulldogs play their home-opener Monday night at the Kennel against the Montana State-Northern Skylights at 7 p.m.
