SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore forward Ashley Burke scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (3-4) to a 65-54 victory over the San Jose State University Spartans (2-3) Saturday night in non-conference action at the Kennel.
An athletic Spartan squad dominated the first 10 minutes of play as they fired 11 unanswered points before Delphine Lecoultre hit a jumper to put the Bulldogs on the board at 10:35.
Gonzaga continued to carve away at the San Jose lead as they went on a 12-to-1 point run sparked by a layup by Burke. The Bulldogs pulled within two points in the last minute of the first half before Jessica Kellog buried a three-pointer with one second remaining to give the Spartans the 22-17 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs turned the momentum around early in the second half as Burke drew a foul on a good jumper and poured in seven points in less than a minute to tie the game 24-24 with 18:32 remaining.
Teoma Taylor regained the lead for the Spartans on a jumper before Raeanna Jewell sank a three to give the Bulldogs the 29-28 edge at 16:48.
Gonzaga narrowly maintained the lead as San Jose came within one point three times. Burke paced the Bulldogs with 20 points, going 10-for-14 from the from the free-throw line. Shannon Mathews finished with 13 points and five rebounds as she went 3-for-8 from three-point territory. The Bulldogs shot 20 percent from the field in the first half and 46.3 percent in the second half to finish with 33.3 percent on the night and remain undefeated at home this season.
Cricket Williams led San Jose with 19 points and four rebounds and was called for a technical foul in the second half while Tatiana Taylor collected nine points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with less than two minutes to play. The Spartans finished the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field.
The Bulldogs continue non-conference play Wednesday against the Washington State University Cougars at 7 p.m. at the Kennel.
