Lady Dons Defeat Bulldog Women 72-67

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs (11-17, 2-12) closed out the regular season Saturday night at the Kennel with a 72-67 loss to the University of San Francisco Lady Dons (17-10, 9-5).
Both teams started slow as the Dons took the lead scoring only 11 points in the first 10 minutes. The Bulldogs chipped away to come within two points at 9:42.
Freshman guard Raeanna Jewell tied the game at 9:05 with a lay-up pulling the score even 11-all. Senior center Bernice Stime gave the Bulldogs their first lead 13-11 with a jumper with eight minutes remaining in the half. She gave the Bulldogs two more points seconds later with a driving layup pulling the Zags up 15-11.
The two teams traded leads four times in the last five minutes of the first half before USF pulled ahead with two consecutive three-pointers giving them the 25-19 lead with 3:52 left. The Lady Dons continued to lead in the last minutes of the first half pulling away by as many as 12 points. They left for the locker room with the 41-29 advantage.
USF came back in the second half to maintain a 10-point lead for the first three minutes before two turnovers gave the Zags a four-point run from Shannon Mathews. With the score 46-40 in favor of the Lady Dons the Bulldogs pulled within three again led by the scoring efforts of Juliann Laney.
Alicia Hernandez landed a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give the Lady Dons the 51-45 lead with 11:32 left. Laney sank a three to bring the Zags within six 57-51 with 8:15 left. Burke hit a three to threaten the Lady Dons 57-53.
Gonzaga kept San Francisco in reach coming within four again 63-59 with 1:50 left. Lindsey Huff sank two good free throws to pull the Lady Dons up 67-59. Three good free throw shots with 48 seconds by freshman Toni Russell would secure the 72-67 victory for the Lady Dons.
Freshman Shannon Mathews led the Bulldogs with a team-high 15 points while Jessica Malone, Raeanna Jewell and Bernice Stime all recorded double figures.
Gonzaga shot 34.9 percent from the field, 15 percent form 3-point range and 87 percent from the free-throw line.
Alicia Hernandez led the Lady Dons with a game-high 19 points while Lindsey Huff chipped in 15 points.
The Bulldogs are seeded No. 8 in the West Coast Conference standings and will face No. 1 Pepperdine during the opening day of the WCC tournament Thursday. Game times will be announced this week on the Gonzaga Bulldogs website.
