Toreros Top Bulldog Women 63-48

SPOKANE, Wash. - The University of San Diego Toreros (10-11, 3-6) snapped a five game losing streak Thursday night as they defeated the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (11-12, 2-7) 63-48 at the Kennel.
The Toreros improved to 3-6 in West Coast Conference play pulling themselves out of the three-way knot with Gonzaga and University of Portland.
San Diego established the early lead in the first five minutes with a 9-3 point run pulling ahead by as many as 10 points before Gonzaga answered coming within two with 4:47 remaining. The Toreros would never relinquish the lead as they were paced by junior Erin Malich with 11 first-half points. The Bulldogs were led by freshman forward Ashley Burke with 10 points. USD held the 35-27 lead at halftime.
The Zags held Kerri Nakamoto the nation's No. 1 3-point percentage shooter to 1-of-5 during first-half action.
The Toreros continued to dominate after half time going on a 4 -11 point run to lead by as many 15 points.
Senior Melanie Tipps gave the Bulldogs a hard fought jumper to pull within seven points 48-41 with 7:28 left. That's as close as the Zags would get in the second half.
The Toreros shot 40.8 percent from the field as four players recorded double figures.
Raeanna Jewell, Shannon Mathews and Burke all got into foul trouble in the last five minutes recording four personal fouls each.
The Bulldogs shot 32. 7 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line.
Malich posted a double - double for the Toreros scoring a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Burke was the Bulldogs high-scorer with 15 points.
Gonzaga defeated San Diego earlier this season in overtime 75-65.
The Bulldogs return to WCC action Saturday night at the Kennel against the Santa Clara Broncos at 7 p.m.
