Gonzaga Rolls Over UC Riverside 64-55

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Riverside Highlanders fell to the Gonzaga University Bulldogs 64-55 at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside, Calif., Thursday night.
In the second half, the Highlanders (3-8) scored the first two buckets to get as close as 32-30 but the Bulldogs (8-5) scored six straight to up their lead to 40-32 with 16:02 left in the game. It was still a two-point game at 42-40 but Gonzaga used a decisive 13-4 run to take a comfortable 55-44 advantage with 6:45 left in the game and went on to the 64-55 win.
Sophomore forward Delphine Lecoultre led the Bulldogs with 16 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks off the bench while sophomore guard Shannon Mathews had 18 points and six assists. GU shot 23-of-56 (41.1%) from the field and 6-of-20 (30.0%) from behind the arc.
Junior guard Trecha Kennedy led the Highlanders with 23 points, 8-of-11 from the line, and four assists while sophomore guard Casandra Reeves had nine points and three assists. UCR shot 16-of-54 (296%) from the field and 4-of-13 (30.8%) from three-point range.
The Bulldogs outrebounded UCR 47-32 overall while UCR forced 20 turnovers and committed 16.
UCR opened the game with a 9-5 lead but Gonzaga used a 20-6 run to take a 25-15 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs were still up by 10 but the Highlanders hit the last two baskets of the half to cut the margin to 32-26 at the half.
The Bulldogs gained the advantage mostly on the glass, outrebounding UCR 28-18 and using the advantage to take 15 more shots than the Highlanders. Gonzaga shot 13-of-40 (32.5%) from the field, including 4-of-16 (25.0%) from behind the arc while the Highlanders shot 8-of-25 (32.0%) from the field. Riverside stayed in the game by hitting 7-of-8 (87.5%)from the line.
The Bulldogs head to Montana Sunday to face the University of Montana Lady Griz at 1 p.m. PST.
