Women's Hoops Collects Fourth Consecutive WCC Win

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore forward Raeanna Jewell scored 13 points to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (13-8, 4-2) to its fourth-consecutive West Coast Conference win Thursday night, defeating the University of San Diego Toreros (8-11,2-4) 67-58 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
The Toreros and the Zags went back and forth in the opening half with Gonzaga taking a 27-25 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 13-3 run and held a ten-point advantage throughout the final period. Sophomore forward Raeanna Jewell scored ten second half points and finished with a team-high 13. Jewell would also tally six steals on the night.
Gonzaga guard's Mathews and Allen played very well for the Bulldogs. Mathews finished the game with eight assists, seven rebounds and 11 points. Allen posted 12 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field. The Bulldogs shot 44.2 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point territory and 75 percent from the charity stripe.
The Toreros benefited from a game-best 16 points from junior center Marta Menuez. 12 of Menuez's 16 points came from the free-throw line. USD shot just 29% from the floor, scoring just 25 first half points on 1-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Senior Kerri Nakamoto did connect on a pair of three's Thursday night and also made three steals. Nakamoto was one of three Toreros who finished with eight points.
Thursday's win marks the Bulldogs first WCC win on the road this season, Gonzaga's last conference road win came Feb. 3, 2002 as they defeated the University of Portland Pilots 71-65. The Bulldogs are off to the best start since the 1993-94 season.
The Bulldogs continue WCC action Saturday when they visit the Santa Clara University Broncos at the Leavey Center at 7 p.m. Gonzaga returns to the Kennel Thursday to host the Loyola Marymount
