Womack Competes in Consolation Finals at UM Tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. - Gonzaga University senior Jamie Buterbaugh won the 2003 University of Montana Fall Invitational with her 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 1 seed Sunel Nieuwoudt of University of Idaho. Buterbaugh, seeded No. 2, has won her second tournment in two weeks with her win in the Whitworth Women's Open last weekend. Bryce Cooper made it to the quarterfinal round of play for the Bulldogs before falling to No. 2 seed Brad Lum-Tucker of Idaho on Saturday.
On the women's courts, Sirrah Williams advanced to the quarterfinal round of consolation play as she defeated Malena Rosen of Montana, 6-3, 6-2, but fell to Tara Fielding of Idaho in the semifinals.
Also for the women, the doubles tandem of Kendall Bates and Leigh Orne advanced to the semifinals, but lost to No. 1 seed Sunel Nieuwoudt/Mariel Tinnirello team from Idaho. Saturday's results were corrected, reversing the victory credited to Gonzaga in the Buterbaugh/Angela Fry and Kareen Konishi/Patricia Ruman match back to Idaho.
For the men, Brett Womack made it to the championship match of consolation play, with his victory over teammate Reid Arthur (7-6, 6-3). Womack was defeated in the championships by Seth Banks of Idaho, 6-1, 6-3. Banks had previously defeated Dru Ernst in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-3 to advance.
Doubles play faired well for the men as the Bulldogs teamed Cooper and Ernst to advance to the semifinal round. Hector Mucharrez and Seth Banks defaulted the match for Idaho, but Cooper/Ernst were defeated by No. 1 seeded team Jan Steenekamp/Stan Nevolovich of Montana, 8-3.
Both the Gonzaga men's and women's tennis teams go back on the road next weekend as the men participate in the Omni ITA Regional Championships in Moraga, Calif., and the women play in the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga, Calif. on Oct. 17-20.
