LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount University (23-5, 8-3 WCC) dominated all facets of the match on Friday night as the 17th-ranked Lions easily dispatched of the Gonzaga University volleyball team. LMU swept the season series from the Bulldogs (3-25, 0-12 WCC) with a 3-0 win. Loyola Marymount won the contest 30-18, 30-14, 30-11.
LMU combined for a .367 attack percentage as Kealani Kimball had a match-high 14 kills to lead a Lions squad that finished with 46 total kills. Kelli Nerison finished with 10 kills on 13 attacks to round out the LMU double figure attackers. Nicole Oehlman passed out 38 assists.
Gonzaga's offensive was held in check as Abby Cullen was the only Zags player to reach double figure kills with 10. GU had only 25 kills as a team combining for a negative .045 attack percentage. LMU's blocking attack played a factor in the Zags offense inability as the Lions combined for 17 blocks, Nerison and Tiana Newsome leading the charge with four each.
"This was the best a team has played defensive against us all season," mentioned head coach Kip Yoshimura on the Lions performance. "You have to give them credit for not letting us get on track offensively. Hopefully we learned some things tonight and can use those items during tomorrow night's match at Pepperdine."
Five Gonzaga players collected one block with Lauren Armas getting the lone solo block. Senior Heather Signor added 13 digs to close to within 52 digs of the school record.
The Bulldogs play at No. 4 Pepperdine on Saturday night at 7 p.m. before returning to Spokane to host Portland next Saturday night for senior night. Gonzaga will honor its four seniors, Abby Cullen, Natasha Kozen, Heather Signor and Jamie VanMeetren prior to the 7 p.m. start.
