SCOUTING THE DUCKS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will host University of Oregon Ducks in their home opener at The Kennel on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The Ducks face Gonzaga after two regular-season wins, including a 76-67 upset over No. 9 Louisiana State University on Nov. 16. Oregon also defeated Valparaiso, 60-47, that same weekend. Oregon returns senior Cathrine Kraayeveld, who leads the team in scoring with 25.5 points per game at the beginning of the season. The 6-4 forward scored 26 points in the Ducks' victory over LSU, coming back from missing half of the 2002-03 season with a staph infection in her right knee. Oregon also looks towards junior center Andrea Bills to lead the team. Bills tallied 24 points in 29 minutes on the floor against LSU as she was only one of two Ducks to start all 28 games of the 2003 season. Oregon ended the 2003 season with a 12-16 overall record and a 8-10 record (tied for fifth place) in the Pac-10 Conference.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Gonzaga University women's basketball looks towards a first round match up with University of Washington Huskies at the Seattle Times Classic on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m. The Huskies participate in the tournament after winning the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic at Stan Sheriff Center. Washington defeated University of Maine in the first round, 82-70, then Lipscomb in the championship game, 78-52. The Huskies return All-American and 2003 Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year, Giuliana Mendiola to lead the team as she averaged 17.5 points per game during the 2002-03 season. Washington also boasts freshman newcomer Breanne Watson, who averaged eight points and two steals per game so far this season.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS: Oklahoma State University could play against Gonzaga University in a second-round match of the Seattle Times Classic. The Cowgirls travel to Washington after losing their season opener at University of Tulsa, 58-56 Oklahoma State Iowa led the entire first half, with a seven-point advantage at halftime. The Cowgirls held as much as a ten-point lead in the second half, but Tulsa rallied to overcome Oklahoma State by two points. The Cowgirls return junior Nina Stone to lead the team as she tallied a game-high 21 points with five rebounds in the game against Tulsa. Oklahoma State also looks towards sophomore Lori Allen to step up for the team, with five points, four assists and two steals against Tulsa.
SCOUTING THE (YALE) BULLDOGS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team could face another 'Battle of the Bulldogs' as they could possibly play Yale University in the second round of the Seattle Times Classic. The Bulldogs travel to Seattle after a 67-63 loss to Quinnipiac on Friday, Nov. 21. Yale was able to bring the game to a 60-all tie with 5:05 on the clock, but the Bulldogs couldn't hold on for the win. Yale returns junior forward Tory Mauseth, who led the team with 22 points in the season opener. The Bulldogs also look to freshman newcomer Erica Davis, who totaled nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the same game.
ANDERSON VS. THE ALL-AMERICANS: Sophomore forward Ashley Anderson is proving her worth to the Gonzaga University women's basketball team as she will defend against four All-Americans in the first six games of the season. The Enterprise, Ore., native defended the 2002-03 nation's leading scorer, Conference USA's Player of the Year, and All-American Chandi Jones of University of Houston, limiting her to 9 points in the first half. Anderson will also being taking on Cathrine Kraayeveld of University of Oregon in the Bulldogs' home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Gonzaga then travels to University of Washington for the Seattle Times Classic, when Anderson will face yet another All-American and 2003 Pacific-10 Player of the Year, Giuliana Mendiola. Just when things settle down, the Bulldogs head to University of Utah, where Anderson will defend against All-American and Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, Kim Smith. Anderson is averaging 14.5 points per game, 6-0 rebounds per game and 1.0 assists per game in the first two games of the season.
HOME OPENER IN THE KENNEL: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team opens its home season as the Bulldogs play host to University of Oregon on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in The Kennel. Head coach Kelly Graves is 2-1 in home openers at Gonzaga over his three years. Last season, the Bulldogs marked a 76-51 victory over Montana State, Northern, (11/25/03) to start off the most successful season in over 10 years. Graves' home opener loss came against University of Pacific during the 2001-02 season, when the Bulldogs lost to the Tigers in overtime, 86-85.
THANKSGIVING IN SEATTLE: The Bulldogs head west as the Gonzaga University women's basketball team will participate in the Seattle Times Classic, hosted by University of Washington, on Nov. 28-29. The Bulldogs will first take on the host of the tournament, Washington, on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. On the second day of tournament play, Gonzaga will play either Oklahoma State or Yale University in what could be the consolation or championship match. Times for the second round will be determined.
ANDERSON ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Sophomore Ashley Anderson received All-Tournament team honors for the Hawkeye Challenge, hosted by University of Iowa. Anderson led the Bulldogs in Gonzaga University's season opener with 17 points and six rebounds. as the Bulldogs lost to the eventual tournament winner, University of Houston.. Anderson, a native of Enterprise, Ore., continued her stellar play on Saturday with 12 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots to lead Gonzaga to a 65-59 victory. Also on the All-Tournament team included Sancho Lytlle (Houston), Jennie Lillis (Iowa), Jame Cavey (Iowa), Dionne Goodwin (Butler) and the tournament MVP Chandi Jones (Houston).
BULLDOGS SECOND IN WCC POLLS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program was selected to finish second in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll released by the league office. The Bulldogs are coming off a 18-12 record, their best campaign since appearing in the 1994 Women's NIT with a 21-10 record. The Pepperdine University Waves lead the poll with Loyola Marymount University following behind the Bulldogs in third.
ZAGS TO BE BROADCAST ON FOX TV: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will make its first appearance on FOX Sports as part of the 27-game 2003-04 schedule. The Bulldogs look to make its first commercial broadcast on FOX Sports regional TV from The Kennel in the last home game of the season against University of San Francisco on Feb. 15. This historic game also signifies the last women's basketball game to be played in The Kennel before play opens in the new Gonzaga arena, currently under construction and scheduled to open for 2004-05 season.
BULLDOGS INK TWO FOR 2004-05: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program announced on Nov. 12 that a pair of student-athletes, Elaina Renius and Sarah Schramm, have signed National Letters of Intent and will enroll at Gonzaga as freshmen in the fall of 2004. Renius, a 6-4 native of Grants Pass, Ore., enters her fourth year on the basketball squad at North Valley High School after leading the team to the Oregon state tournament the past two years. Schramm, a 6-0 forward from Chelan, Wash., will enter her fourth season of play at Chelan High School. Schramm averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds as a junior, leading her team to a Central Washington Athletic Conference Championship and Washington state semi-finals. For her efforts, she was named first team All-State for the second time.
GRAVES NAMED 2003 WCC COACH OF THE YEAR: The 2002-03 Gonzaga University women's basketball team (18-11, 9-5) continued its winning season with the selection of head coach Kelly Graves as the West Coast Conference Coach of The Year. Graves was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bulldogs to a second place tie with Santa Clara in the WCC standings. Graves led Gonzaga to an 18-11 mark after finishing eighth in the WCC during the 2001-02 season with an 11-18 record. He collected his 100th career-win on Mar. 1, 2003 as the Bulldogs defeated the San Diego Toreros 86-72. Graves becomes just the second Gonzaga head coach to win Coach of the Year, joining Julie Holt who captured the award in 1994.
