Women's Hoops Gets Win Over Portland State

PORTLAND, Ore. - Ashley Anderson, Ashley Burke and Shannon Mathews combined for 48 points in Gonzaga University women's basketball team's 69-60 victory over Portland State University on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (4-5) were led by Burke with a game-high 17 points while Anderson led the defensive game with 15 points and 12 defensive rebounds, 14 total boards, for her first double-double of the season. Guards Raeanna Jewell, Shannon Mathews and Rachel Kane each marked four assists for Gonzaga.
The Vikings (1-6) were led by Sarah Hedgepeth with 14 points and ten rebounds, followed by Carrie Mitchell with 11 and Jane Gowans with 10.
Portland State took an early lead over Gonzaga with a 20-5 run to start the game. The Bulldogs retaliated with a 19-6 run to bring the game within two at 26-24 with 4:05 in the first half. The Vikings kept the lead going into the second half with a score of 36-30 at the half.
Gonzaga narrowed the margin, tying the score 45-all at the 12:14 minute mark. The teams would exchange the lead several times until the Bulldogs pulled away with the lead from a jump shot by Anderson with 2:26 on the clock for a 63-60 advantage. Anderson scored four of the next six free throws for the final score, 69-60.
Gonzaga shot 39.3 per cent from the field (24-61) while Portland State shot 38.8 per cent (26-66). The Bulldogs went 40 per cent from beyond the arc (6-15) while the Vikings shot only 18 per cent (2-11).
Gonzaga returns home to host UC Riverside on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. at The Kennel in Spokane, Wash. The women's basketball team will be hosting their inaugural Canned Food Drive, offering half price admission to those that bring three cans of food or more.
