SEASON START NO PROBLEM FOR BULLDOGS: The Bulldogs ended their weekend in Utah with two losses to drop their record to 2-5. This was the first time this season that the Gonzaga University women's basketball team has lost both games of weekend play. All of the Bulldogs' losses have come when then team scores 64 points or less for the entire game. However, the 2-5 start of Gonzaga University is same record that the 2002-03 team started with en route to a second-place tie in the West Coast Conference and an 18-12 record to end the season.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Gonzaga University hosts Boise State University in only the second home game for the Bulldogs so far this season on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. in The Kennel. The Broncos travel to Gonzaga coming off a 71-57 loss to University of Idaho, dropping Boise State to a 2-3 record on the season. Sophomore center Jamie Hawkins leads the Broncos in scoring with 16.8 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. Boise State also looks to junior Cariann Ramirez to lead the offensive charge has she is the only other Bronco to average double-figure points this season with 11.0 per game. Boise State leads the series, 13-4, against Gonzaga, but the Bulldogs claimed the most recent victory with an 82-55 win during the 2002-03 season.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team goes back on the road one last time before starting a six-game homestand as the Bulldogs travel to Portland State University on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The Vikings host Gonzaga after losing their frist two home games of the season to Oregon State University and University of Portland. Portland State returns senior forward Sarah Hedgepeth to lead the team as she is closing in her 700th career rebound, averaging 9.2 boards per game. Hedgepeth is also approaching the 1,000 career point mark, with 957 career points going into the game against the Bulldogs. The Vikings hold a 5-4 series advantage against Gonzaga, but the two teams have not met since the 1991-92 season.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will begin a six-game homestand as the Bulldogs host University of California, Riverside, on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. in The Kennel. The Highlanders have yet to post a win this season, with four losses as their record. UC Riverside holds an 0-2 record against West Coast Conference teams with an 82-66 loss to Loyola Marymount University on Dec. 5 and a 70-57 loss to Pepperdine University on Nov. 28. The Highlanders return junior guard Casandra Reeves, who leads the team averaging 16.5 points per game. Reeves also leads the team with 18 assists on the season.
ANDERSON VS. THE ALL-AMERICANS: Sophomore forward Ashley Anderson is proving her worth to the Gonzaga University women's basketball team as she started the season against four All-Americans in the first six games of the season. The Enterprise, Ore., native defended the 2002-03 nation's leading scorer, Conference USA's Player of the Year, and All-American Chandi Jones of University of Houston, limiting her to 9 points in the first half. Anderson also took on Cathrine Kraayeveld of University of Oregon in the Bulldogs' home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Anderson kept Kraayeveld to seven total points on the game, and five rebounds. There is no rest for the weary, and Gonzaga headed to University of Washington for the Seattle Times Classic, when Anderson faced yet another All-American and 2003 Pacific-10 Player of the Year, Giuliana Mendiola. Anderson was also matched up against University of Utah's Kim Smith, and limited her to below average with 15 points.
HAWK FLYING HIGH: Gonzaga University freshman Stephanie Hawk made herself known to University of Utah as she put away ten points against the then-ranked No. 19 Utes on Thursday, Dec. 6. The The Ontario, Ore., native destroyed her previous season/career high and scored double-digit points for the first time in her collegiate career. Hawk has become a regular fixture for the Bulldogs as she currently averages 10.2 minutes per game, the second highest amount for a freshman after Rachel Kane. In the same game against Utah, Kane shut down the offensive attacks with two blocked shots and one steal.
CHASING THE RECORD BOOKS: Four Bulldogs find themselves in the Gonzaga University women's basketball career record books, looking to advance up the prestigious ladder. Juniors Shannon Mathews and Raeanna Jewell share top ten spots in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted. Mathews holds the third-place mark with 111 three-pointers made and Jewell continues to climb the ladder at No. 8 with 64 made. Mathew also is in the top five in three-pointers attempted at No. 4 with 346. Jewell is in seventh plade with 226. Mathews looks to advance her status with another career record as well with 289 career assists, establishing her as No. 5 in the record books.
SEATTLE ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS: Sophomore forward Ashley Anderson and freshman guard Rachel Kane were selected to the All-Tournament team of the Seattle Times Classic. This is Anderson's second All-Tournament selection of the season, and Kane's first All-Tournament selection of her career. Anderson scored 15 points against host University of Washington, and Kane penetrated both games with 12 points in each. Along with the Bulldogs, Erica Davis of Yale University, Andrea Lalum of Washington and Trisha Skibbe from Oklahoma State University each were voted to the select team. Giuliana Mendiola of Washington was named the Tournament MVP.
STARTING FRESH: Gonzaga University women's basketball team's freshmen class is stealing the show with Rachel Kane, Stephanie Hawk and Katy Ridenour all making regular appearances on the hardwood. Kane, a 5-7 guard from Kaneohe, HI, has established herself as a part of the starting five as the only freshman this season with that honor, as well as leads the team with 225 minutes on the court. Kane has averaged 6.7 points per game, with 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game so far this season. Ridenour, a 5-11 guard from Post Falls, Idaho, has been a critical player off the bench for the Bulldogs. Ridenour averages 1.6 points per game, with 1.6 rebounds per game. Hawk, a 6-3 forward from Ontario, OR, also serves up height off the bench for Gonzaga. As the second tallest woman on the team, Hawk looks make an impact on the Bulldogs' inside game averaging 3.7 points per game and 1.5 rebounds per game.
BULLDOGS SECOND IN WCC POLLS: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program was selected to finish second in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches poll released by the league office. The Bulldogs are coming off a 18-12 record, their best campaign since appearing in the 1994 Women's NIT with a 21-10 record. The Pepperdine University Waves lead the poll with Loyola Marymount University following behind the Bulldogs in third.
ZAGS TO BE BROADCAST ON FOX TV: The Gonzaga University women's basketball team will make its first appearance on FOX Sports as part of the 27-game 2003-04 schedule. The Bulldogs look to make its first commercial broadcast on FOX Sports regional TV from The Kennel in the last home game of the season against University of San Francisco on Feb. 15. This historic game also signifies the last women's basketball game to be played in The Kennel before play opens in the new Gonzaga arena, currently under construction and scheduled to open for 2004-05 season.
BULLDOGS INK TWO FOR 2004-05: The Gonzaga University women's basketball program announced on Nov. 12 that a pair of student-athletes, Elaina Renius and Sarah Schramm, have signed National Letters of Intent and will enroll at Gonzaga as freshmen in the fall of 2004. Renius, a 6-4 native of Grants Pass, Ore., enters her fourth year on the basketball squad at North Valley High School after leading the team to the Oregon state tournament the past two years. Schramm, a 6-0 forward from Chelan, Wash., will enter her fourth season of play at Chelan High School. Schramm averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds as a junior, leading her team to a Central Washington Athletic Conference Championship and Washington state semi-finals. For her efforts, she was named first team All-State for the second time.
GRAVES NAMED 2003 WCC COACH OF THE YEAR: The 2002-03 Gonzaga University women's basketball team (18-11, 9-5) continued its winning season with the selection of head coach Kelly Graves as the West Coast Conference Coach of The Year. Graves was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bulldogs to a second place tie with Santa Clara in the WCC standings. Graves led Gonzaga to an 18-11 mark after finishing eighth in the WCC during the 2001-02 season with an 11-18 record. He collected his 100th career-win on Mar. 1, 2003 as the Bulldogs defeated the San Diego Toreros 86-72. Graves becomes just the second Gonzaga head coach to win Coach of the Year, joining Julie Holt who captured the award in 1994.
