Women's Basketball Falls To Pepperdine 66-60

SPOKANE, Wash. - Keani Christianson and Nicole Funn combined for 32 points Saturday night to lead the University of Pepperdine Waves (16-6, 8-1) to a 66-60 victory over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (14-10, 5-4) in West Coast Conference action at the Kennel.
Gonzaga took the lead 6-5 in the first three minutes of play on a jumper by Raeanna Jewell. Pepperdine tied the game for the first time at 8-8 with 15 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs led for the bulk of the first half as they pulled away by as many as eight points before the Waves mounted a comeback and tied the game again at 20-20 with just over five minutes left in the first half. Pepperdine continued to pull away as they out-shot Gonzaga 12-7 to go to the locker room with the 37-29 advantage.
The Waves built an 18-point lead in the first part of the second half before Triana Allen sank three 3-point shots in two minutes to bring the Bulldogs back within 10 points with 10 minutes remaining. The two teams traded baskets as the Bulldogs continued to narrow the lead to come within two points with thirty seconds left as the Waves led 62-60. Shanell Law and Tamara McDonald went to the line for Pepperdine and sank four free throws in the last seconds to win the game 66-60.
Ashley Burke led the Bulldogs with 14 points while Raeanna Jewell (11), Triana Allen (12) and Anne Bailey (10) all shot double- figures on the night. Gonzaga finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point territory and 51.7 percent from the three-point line.
Christianson and Funn both tallied 16 points each to pace Peppderdine while Law put up 10 points. The Waves shot 38.2 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc and 70 percent from the charity stripe.
The Waves remain a perfect 5-0 on the road in the WCC play as they snapped the Bulldogs four-game WCC win streak at home.
Gonzaga returns WCC play Friday against the Saint Mary's College Gaels at McKeon Pavilion at 7 p.m.
