Men's Tennis Falls At Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team started its 2003 Spring Break trip on a down note as the Bulldogs fell to West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's College, 6-1, in Moraga. The Bulldogs were able to win the team point as Bryce Cooper and Drew Ernst defeated Ed Whitlinger and Thomas Burgemeister in one of the three doubles matches. Gonzaga's duo of Reid Arthur and Robert Penney won another of the doubles matches to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead in the match. Arthur and Penney defeated Martin Marechal and Josh Farley.
After falling behind 1-0 at the conclusion of doubles play, Saint Mary's rallied to win all six of the singles points during the match. Cooper, playing as the Bulldogs No.1 seed, took Burgemeister to a 7-5 tie-breaker in the opening set before falling in two. Penney also pushed Whitlinger to a 7-5 tie-breaker before falling in two sets in the No. 5 position.
Gonzaga continues its Spring Break trip in the Bay Area as the Bulldogs play Sacramento State on Monday and San Francisco on Tuesday. Gonzaga is now 2-5 on the season.
