Varsity Crews Advance To Cal Cup Grand Final

SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga University men's and women's varsity crew both advanced to the Grand Final of the 2003 Cal Cup during Saturday heat racing at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay. Gonzaga's men won their heat while Gonzaga's women finished second in their heat race.
The Bulldog men raced neck-and-neck with the University of Minnesota down the 2,000 meter course before pulling away in the last few strokes to win the heat race with a time of 6:37.1. Minnesota finished two seconds behind at 6:39.1 four seconds ahead of Hobart College in third place. Western Washington University and the University of Massachusetts won the other two heat races while defending champion Orange Coast College and Southern California finished second in those races to advance to the Cal Cup Grand Final.
Gonzaga's varsity men's crew consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch. The Cal Cup Grand Final is set for 2:20 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Last year Gonzaga's men finished fifth in the Grand Final.
The Gonzaga women had a battle of their own in the opening heat race as West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount University surprised the Zags and defeated Gonzaga for the first-time ever with a time of 7:24.7. Gonzaga lost the race by half a second as the Lions made two late stroke pulls to garner the win. Both schools advanced to Sunday's Cal Cup Grand Final along with heat winners UCLA and the University of Louisville. The University of West Virginia and University of San Diego also earned berths in the Cal Cup Grand Final.
Gonzaga's varsity women's crew consisted of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt and Bridget Troy. The Cal Cup Grand Final is set for 2:10 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Last year Gonzaga's women finished sixth in the Grand Final. Two weeks ago the Bulldogs defeated LMU by over 10 seconds in the WCC Challenge at Redwood Shores, California.
