Men's Tennis Fairs Well In First Day Of Tournamen

BOISE, Idaho - Jesse Goldsmith advanced to the Round of 16 with a defeat over Michael Manser as the Gonzaga University men's tennis team participated in the first day of the Boise Falls Men's Open on Friday afternoon. Goldsmith defeated Manser in the Round of 32 (6-2, 6-2), but fell to Adam Sutts in the Round of 16 (6-0, 6-1).
Also for the Bulldogs, Bryce Cooper was defeated by Quinn Borchard, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 32, but was victorious in the first round of consolation play as he won his match against Steven Ly, 6-3, 6-4). Joining Cooper in the consolation round was Drew Ernst, seeded eighth in the tournament. Ernst was defeated by Fabian Drummett in the Round of 32, and won by default over Scott Wood to advance him to the second consolation round.
Robert Penney also stepped on the court for the Bulldogs as he was defeated by Darius Schwarz (6-1, 6-7, 6-4), but won his first round consolation match against Todd Czaplicki, 6-0, 6-2. Brett Womack was defeated early in the tournament as well, losing to Zach Rideout in the Round of 32 (6-4, 6-4), and fell to the seventh-seeded player, Golan Sasson (6-1, 6-2).
Doubles play proved difficult for Gonzaga as neither doubles team was able to advance during the first day. Cooper and Womack teamed together, as well as Reid Arthur and Ernst.
The second day of play will take place on Sept. 13, 2003.
