Men's Golf Opens Season At Air Force Invite

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Gonzaga University men's golf team opened the 2003 season in a tough field and the Bulldogs found themselves at the bottom of the scoreboard looking up after the completion of the first day of play at the Air Force Falcon Gene Miranda Invite in Colorado Springs. The field included 97 golfers with 29 of them shooting Even or better to open competition on the Eisenhower Blue Course on Friday afternoon. Of the 18 teams entered in the tournament three of them posted team scores of Even or better with Texas-San Antonio leading the competition at -6 for the day.

Gonzaga stands 18th after the first 18 holes of play with a team score of 310 on the afternoon. The Bulldogs are two strokes behind fellow West Coast Conference member San Diego and within ten strokes of moving into 13th position. Souta Nozaka led the Bulldogs group of golfers with a 2-over round of 74 to stand in a 13 way tie for 43rd. Adam Syverson was tied for 65th as the second best Gonzaga golfer after a round of 77 on the Par-72 course.

Mike Mezei of Texas-San Antonio led the field with a blistering round of six-under 66 with 33's on the back and front nine. Adam Choy of Boise State was second on the day with a four-under 68 and Barry Schenk of Weber State was third with a round of 69.

Following Texas-San Antonio in the team championship hunt are New Mexico JV with a team score of one-under 287 and Denver with an Even round of 288. Play continues on Saturday and Sunday at the Eisenhower Blue Course.
