SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman midfielder Heather Horn scored twice and senior striker Ashley Pryor tallied once to lead the Gonzaga University women's soccer team to a commanding 3-1 victory over West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount University on Friday at Martin Field.
With the win GU snaps the Lions five-match unbeaten streak and moves to 9-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WCC. Loyola Marymount drops to 7-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the WCC.
In the 27th minute senior forward Annie Hawkins launched a rocket from about five yards out which was saved and bounced to the feet of Horn. Horn wasted no time and skied the ball into the net past the Lions starting goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek to give the Zags an early advantage.
Nine minutes later Gonzaga received a corner kick and Stacey Sarro put the ball in play in front of the Lions goal box. The ball was bounced around and found the feet of Pryor who touched the ball over to Horn who had a clear look at the net and hit a rocket through a crowded goal box which found the back of the net for her second goal of the game.
"I was just in the right place at the right time," said Horn. "I give credit to Ashley (Pryor) for a perfect pass."
The Zags were not content with a two goal advantage and pushed forward for another goal. In the 49th minute a determined Sarah Hawkins dribbled through the Lions defense and found Pryor on the left side. Pryor corralled the pass from Hawkins and put the ball out of the reach of the Lions back-up goalkeeper senior Kelly Yukihiro to give GU a comfortable three goal lead.
The Lions spoiled the shutout for the Bulldogs in the 88th minute when junior forward Kellie Schroeder controlled a pass from freshman midfielder Stefanie Baduria and put the ball in the back of the net for LMU's only goal.
"I think we outworked LMU today." said head coach Shannon Stiles. "We really wanted the shutout so I am little disappointed that we didn't get it. But overall I am pleased with our performance."
Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen had a stellar day in the net for the Bulldogs as she recorded eight saves in picking up the win. Loyola Marymount's Slovek recorded six saves while taking the loss for the Lions and Yukihiro recorded four saves in relief for Slovek.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday as they host No. 20 Pepperdine University in an 11 a.m. WCC match at Martin Field.
