WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (10-8-0, 2-3-0 WCC) will be in action on Sunday as the Bulldogs host the Saint Mary's College Gaels in a 2 p.m. West Coast Conference Match at Martin Field. This will be the final home match of the season for the Zags. GU will be honoring its senior class prior to the start of the game. The GU 2004 seniors are; Laura Morin, Jessie Torres, Brooke Longacre Natalie Hardin, Ashley Pryor, Walker Loseno, Annie Hawkins, Sarah Hawkins.
LAST TIME OUT: Gonzaga University dropped two West Coast Conference matches to No. 10 Santa Clara University and to the 25th-ranked Toreros of the University of San Diego. Last Friday, SCU dominated the time of possession, outshot the Bulldogs 15-2 and held a decisive advantage in corner kicks 7-0 in the 1-0 shutout. On Sunday, the Zags suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to USD. In the match GU had its best scoring opportunity in the second period when senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins was awarded a penalty kick. The shot went towards the lower left corner of the goal and was batted away by San Diego's goalkeeper. Three minutes into the overtime period USD slipped one past GU junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen to lift the Toreros to a 1-0 win.
MISCELLANY: Gonzaga University is 1-10-0 all-time against Saint Mary's College with the Bulldogs claiming the last meeting 3-1 in 2003...the Zags are 1-4-0 this season against ranked opponents...GU is outscoring its opponents 26-22...the Bulldogs are being outshot by their opponents 280-199...opponents hold a decisive 102-82 advantage in corner kicks over GU.
HOME, SWEET HOME: Gonzaga University has begun to make Martin Field an unfriendly place for opponents as the Zags have posted a 11-5-0 record on its home pitch since the start of the 2003 season. GU has a 6-1-0 record at Martin Field this season.
HAUGEN BREAKS RECORD: Gonzaga University junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen has moved into the all-time lead in career saves with 355, passing Sara Kinsky (1994-97) who finished her career with 330.
IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Gonzaga University senior forward Annie Hawkins ranks second all-time in several statistical categories. She is second in goals scored with 26, tied for second in assists with nine, second in shot attempts with 165 and second in total points with 61. Senior forward Walker Loseno has notched herself in the career books as well. She is tied for second all-time in assists with nine, tied for fourth in points with 32, fourth in shot attempts with 97 and fifth all-time in goals scored with 11.
ONE MORE WIN: Gonzaga University is one win short of tying the most wins in program history at 11 which was set last season when the Bulldogs finished 11-8-0. GU is also one win away from securing the Bulldogs second consecutive winning season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Gonzaga University as a team is tied for fourth in the West Coast Conference in goals scored with 26 and fifth in total points with 70. Senior forward Annie Hawkins is tied for fourth in the WCC with seven goals scored and is fourth in shots taken with 57. Senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins is tied for ninth in assists in the WCC with four.
GET HER THE DARN BALL: As goes senior forward Annie Hawkins, so do the Zags. Gonzaga University is 7-1-0 this season when Hawkins finds the back of the net and is 14-2-0 over the past two seasons when Hawkins scores. Since the start of the 2003 season, Hawkins has scored a goal once every 5.4 shots she takes.
FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTION: Gonzaga University has had a couple of freshman make huge contributions this season. Forward Heather Horn has recorded five goals, three of which were match-winners, and chiped in two assists for 12 points. Midfielder Jamie Blanche has tallied two assists and one match-winning goal for four points.
SCOUTING THE GAELS: The Saint Mary's College Gaels enter the week with an 8-10-0 overall record and a 0-5-0 mark in the West Coast Conference after suffering a pair of 1-0 WCC losses to Pepperdine University and to Loyola Marymount University last weekend. SMC has outscored its opponents 24-21 and has been outshot 208-203. The offense is led by junior midfielder Genevieve Hollis who has tallied a team-leading seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Freshman goalkeeper Angela Lee leads the defense with a 1.17 goals-against-average and has recorded 78 saves.

THE STILES FILE: The first female head women's soccer coach in the history of the West Coast Conference, Shannon Stiles enters her sixth season at Gonzaga with the program coming off the most successful season in school history. The Bulldogs posted their first winning season in school history with an 11-8-0 record and a 3-4-0 mark in WCC play. The three wins in WCC play surpassed the previous total of two conference wins Gonzaga had collected during 10 previous seasons of WCC play. For her efforts Stiles was named WCC Coach of the Year. Her overall record as a collegiate head coach is 37-72-2, making her the winningest coach in program history.
