Volleyball Ends Season With Loss At Portland

PORTLAND - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs ended the 2004 volleyball season on Saturday night with a West Coast Conference loss at the University of Portland (11-16, 2-12 WCC). Gonzaga lost the match in four games falling 14-30, 30-25, 21-30, 22-30 to the Pilots. With the loss Gonzaga finishes the season with a 4-25 record including a 0-14 mark in the WCC, the first time the Bulldogs have not won at least one match in league play.
Junior Lacey Bell led the Gonzaga offensive with 15 kills while freshman outside hitter Becky Jones did her best with 14 kills. The two of them finished with 29 of the Bulldogs 50 kills while senior Rebecca Wood added 10 in her final collegiate game. Gonzaga combined for a .136 team attack percentage with a .222 clip during the game two win. Emilee Gihring and Jessica Herrera had 14 digs each to lead the Bulldogs.
Portland was slightly more effective on offense finishing with 70 team kills and a .266 team attack percentage. Nicole Thometz led the Pilots attack with 14 kills while Sara Vercruyssen had 13. Liz Lord and Michelle Oakland rounded out the Portland top attackers with each player finishing with 12 kills. Murphy McClenahan was the Pilots top defensive player with 20 digs.
Both teams struggled at the net with Gonzaga and Portland both finishing with eight blocks. Briawna Mueller was the Bulldogs big blocker with two solo blocks. Oakland and Kelly Whitehouse each had two block assists for the Pilots.
