SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - A pair of goals from senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins was not enough as the Gonzaga University women's soccer team (11-9-0, 3-4-0 WCC) fell to the University of San Francisco (10-7-3, 3-4-0 WCC), 4-2 Saturday at Negoesco Stadium. In a high scoring affair, the Dons scored with just under five minutes left to seal the win.
San Francisco got on the boards first in the 43rd minute when sophomore midfielder Chelsea Hunt corralled a pass from senior midfielder Annika Schmidt, and slipped the ball past Gonzaga junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen to take the early advantage.
USF added to their lead in the 55th minute of the match when sophomore forward Shuree Hyatt tallied her eighth goal of the season. Hyatt broke free behind the Bulldogs defense and was able to put the ball out of the reach of a diving Haugen to give the Dons a two goal cushion.
With GU's post-season hopes on the line the Bulldogs dug in and cut the lead in half just one minute later. Freshman midfielder Jamie Blanche skied a cornerkick into a crowded goal box, where senior midfielder Sarah Hawkins redirected the ball into the back of the net to record her eighth goal of the season.
In the 81st minute the Bulldogs were back on level terms with the Dons when Hawkins tallied her second goal of the match. Hawkins was able to fight her way through a crowded goal box and control a pass from freshman forward Heather Horn to even the score at two goals apiece.
One minute later the Dons took the lead back when Hyatt scored her second goal of the day. Hyatt took a lead pass from Schmidt and put the ball in the back of the net.
USF's sophomore Kate Nelson put the game out of reach when she recorded her first goal of the season in the 85th minute. Nelson took a lead pass from junior midfielder Stephanie Gray and hit a laser shot past Haugen to give the Dons the victory.
Haugen recorded eight saves in the loss for the Bulldogs, while counterpart Stephanie Beall tallied five saves in the win for USF.
The Dons outshot the Bulldogs 19-11 and held a decisive 10-3 advantage in cornerkicks.
With the victory San Francisco effectively ended Gonzaga's hopes for a playoff berth. The Bulldogs ended the season tying their best WCC record in program history and recorded their second consecutive winning season.
