MISSOULA, Mont. - Gonzaga University senior guard knocked down two of her four 3-pointers during the final two minutes Friday night as the Bulldogs (5-2) survived a road game at the University of Montana. Mathews finished with a team-high 17 points as GU prevailed 57-51.
The Bulldogs turned a one-point halftime lead into a six point cushion at the 12:08 mark of the second half as Raeanna Jewell came off the bench to hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push Gonzaga out to a 42-36 lead. GU would never allow Montana to get within four points over the remainder of the game to knock off the Lady Griz (4-3) for the fourth time in the last five years.
Hollie Tyler kept Montana in the game as she connected for a game-highs with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Both teams struggled to shoot from the floor as Gonzaga shot just 34 percent while Montana was held to 33 percent shooting for the game. The Bulldogs grabbed the advantage in the game with their 3-point shooting as they hit 9-of-22 from behind the arc.
Gonzaga opened the game with a 7-0 run as Mathews hit the first of her 3-pointers to open the game. Gonzaga held the advantage on the boards with a 45-36 rebound advantage including 18 offensive rebounds. Stephanie Hawk the top GU rebounder with a season-high 9 rebounds.
Gonzaga travels to Boise State University for a Sunday afternoon game against the Broncos.
