Strong Bench Play Carries Women's Basketball To Win

SPOKANE, Wash. - Seven Gonzaga University players combined to score 30 points off the bench on Monday night as the Bulldogs won their fourth straight game to head into the Christmas break with an 8-2 record. Gonzaga's bench outscored their Portland State University counterparts 30-7 as the Bulldogs cruised to the 66-48 non-conference victory. Portland State fell to 1-7 on the season.

Dominique Harris scored seven of her eight points in the first half as she sparked the Bulldogs to an 11-4 run hitting a jumper and a pair of free throws off the bench as Gonzaga built a 20-13 lead with five minutes remaining. Harris then capped her first-half scoring with a 3-pointer with seven-seconds remaining to give GU a 32-21 halftime lead.

Elaina Renius was the big force off the bench in the second half for Gonzaga picking up 8 points to go along with 5 rebounds as she drew several fouls in the low block and converted on 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Renius finished with a season-high 12 points as she combined with senior Ashley Burke to give Gonzaga a dominating presence in the post. Burke led all scorers with 17 points, her third straight game with 17 or more points.

Shannon Mathews rounded out the Gonzaga double-digit scorers with 13 points while Renius led the team with seven rebounds, five of them on the offensive glass.

Portland State was led by Delaney Conway with 13 points and Heather Arns with 10 points as the Vikings were limited to 35 percent shooting for the game. After trailing by 11 at halftime, Portland State was never able get closer than eight points when Heidi Stuart hit a jumper with 10:29 remaining to cut the lead to 44-36. Gonzaga would limit Portland State to only four field goals over the final 10:29, the Vikings scoring four of their final eight points from the free throw line.

Gonzaga will now take off the week before returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 29 with a 7 p.m. home game against the University of Utah at McCarthey Athletic Center. Utah enters the game ranked 25th in the latest Associated Press poll, marking the fourth time that a ranked opponent will play Gonzaga in Spokane.
