HEAD COACH Kelly Graves: Kelly Graves is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Gonzaga University Bulldogs looking to take the team to back-to-back post-season berths for the first time in the Division I history of the program. Graves has compiled a 56-67 record at Gonzaga but has built the Bulldogs into a West Coast Conference title contender with consecutive second place finishes in the league. In 2003 he was named the WCC Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a seven game turnaround. Last season the Bulldogs lost in the WCC title game and advanced to the Women's NIT, the first post-season appearance for Gonzaga in ten seasons. Prior to taking over the Bulldogs program Graves built Saint Mary's College into a WCC power with two post-season appearances. His career record is 122-93 including a 51-47 WCC mark.
BULLDOGS HIT THE ROAD AGAIN: Gonzaga hits the road for its final non-conference road trip as the Bulldogs travel to the University of Montana and Boise State University for weekend action. This will be the end of a seven-game road trip that has also taken the Bulldogs to New Mexico and Arizona for tournaments and to Eastern Washington University for a non-conference tilt. The Bulldogs are off to a 4-2 start after a second-place finish in the Wells Fargo Holiday Classic. Following this weekend's road trip, Gonzaga will be home for seven straight games over the Christmas Holiday break including the West Coast Conference opener against Santa Clara University.
SCOUTING THE LADY GRIZ: Gonzaga travels to Missoula, Mont., for a Friday night game against the Lady Griz. Montana enters the week with a 4-1 record including wins over WCC members Pepperdine University and the University of Portland. The Lady Griz face the University of Idaho on Wednesday night before hosting the Bulldogs. Katie Edwards and Hollie Tyler lead the Montana team with each player averaging 13 points a game. Edwards is also the biggest threat from long-range shooting 14-for-35 from 3-point range this season. Montana leads the all-time series 16-5 but Gonzaga is 3-1 against Montana under head coach Kelly Graves including a one-point win in Missoula in 2000.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Gonzaga heads to Boise, Ida., for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Broncos. Boise State is 2-2 on the season and hosts the Air Force Academy on Friday night before entertaining GU. The game will be played in the old Bronco Gym since their is a conflict at the Taco Baco Arena. Jamie Hawkins and Tasha Harris each average 11 points a game to lead Boise State. Gonzaga has won three of the last four meetings in the series under head coach Kelly Graves, however Boise State holds the series advantage 12-5.
BEST GU START UNDER GRAVES: The Bulldogs 4-2 start to the season is the best under head coach Kelly Graves since he took over the program for the 2000-01 season. The 4-2 start also matches the best start for a Gonzaga team since joining the NCAA Division I ranks, Gonzaga starting 4-2 on three other occasions in 20 years of competition. The first time GU started 4-2 was in 1987-88, the Bulldogs winning their seventh game before dropping the eighth. GU again started 4-2 in 1992-93 winning their seventh game and dropping their eighth. The last time GU started 4-2 was in 1993-94. The Bulldogs would go on to start 9-2 and advance to their first Women's NIT with a 21-10 overall record.
MATHEWS NEW ASSIST LEADER: Senior point guard Shannon Mathews became the Bulldogs career assist leader during Saturday's loss to Arizona State as she handed out four assists to pass Amy Simpson on the career chart. Mathews now has 440 career assists and will set her sights on cracking the West Coast Conference Career Top 10 with former Loyola Marymount guard Marlee Webb ranking 10th with 441 assists.
Shannon Mathews hit two career milestones last week becoming the Bulldogs career assist leader and latest 1,000 point scorer. |
MATHEWS HITS ANOTHER MILESTONE: Shannon Mathews also hit another GU milestone earlier in the week as she scored 18 points against Eastern Washington University to become the 10th player to score 1,000 career points. Mathews now has 1,011 career points to rank 10th on the list. She needs just 10 more points to move into 9th on the career list passing Juanita Rivera with 1,021 points.
THE 500 CLUB: Gonzaga welcomed a new member of the 500 rebound club over the weekend as senior Raeanna Jewell moved her career total to 507 rebounds. Jewell joins current teammate Ashley Burke in the 500 rebound club, Burke currently sitting at 551 career boards. Burke needs 11 rebounds to break into the Top 10 and pass Kelli Howell for 10th place on the career list. Burke is working towards the 600 rebound mark and when she reaches it she will become only the fourth Gonzaga player to finish her career with 1,000 points and 600 rebounds joining Juanita Rivera (820 rebounds, 1,021 points), Jessica Malone (642 rebounds, 1,703 points) and Carla Curfman (621 rebounds, 1,333 points). Burke currently has 1,229 points.
TEAM DEFENSE STILL STRONG: Gonzaga continues to lead the WCC in team defense allowing a conference low 55.3 points per game and allowing opponents to shoot 36 percent from the floor. Arizona State was the first team this season to shoot higher than 50 percent for a game finishing with a 51 percent clip. Gonzaga was able to hold the Sun Devils to just 36 percent shooting in the second half, marking the 9th time this season that GU has held an opponent to 36 percent shooting or less during a half.
ANDERSON, MATHEWS EARN ALL-TOURNEY HONORS: Senior Shannon Mathews and junior Ashley Anderson both earned All-Tournament honors at the Wells Fargo Holiday Classic as the Bulldogs finished second. Anderson poured in a season-high 20 points during Friday night's win over Nevada while Mathews passed out 12 assists during the two games to become the Bulldogs career assists leader.
Ashley Anderson scored 20 points against Nevada to earn All-Tournament honors. |
SEASON HIGH FOR HAWK: Sophomore Stephanie Hawk played her best 20 minutes of the season during the second half against Arizona State. The 6-4 forward scored 14 of her season-high 18 points in the second half as Gonzaga outscored ASU in 37-30 in the half. Hawk finished the game shooting 7-for-8 from the floor with four rebounds. She connected on two lay-ins during the final two minutes on assists from Shannon Mathews that first tied and then broke the GU career assist record.
WINNING BIG: In the four games the Bulldogs have won this year they have won in impressive fashion. Gonzaga holds a 34 margin of victory during its four wins while also posting a 12.4 rebound per game advantage. The Bulldogs have also done an exceptional job of getting to the free throw line in their wins. The Bulldogs have gone 67-for-86 from the charity stripe in wins compared to only 60 free throw attempts for their opponents. For the season Gonzaga has gone to the free throw line one more time than its opponents with GU attempting 123 free throws and their opponents 122.
BULLDOGS 54th IN RPI: The Gonzaga Bulldogs are rated 54th in the latest College RPI rankings as compiled by Jeff Sagarin. Gonzaga is the only West Coast Conference team rated in the Top 100 with Santa Clara University second at No. 105. The West Coast Conference is rated 14th out of 32 NCAA Division I conferences. This weeks opponents for the Bulldogs are both currently rated lower than GU on the RPI chart with Montana coming in at No. 136 and Boise State appearing at No. 225.
BULLDOGS ON THE BLOCK: Gonzaga currently leads the WCC with 6.3 blocks per game as Gonzaga has swatted away 38 shots over the first six games. The Bulldogs matched a school record on Friday night with 12 blocks against the University of Nevada. The last time GU blocked 12 shots was in 2001 against the University of Alaska-Anchorage. Gonzaga has now blocked at least one shot in 10 straight games dating back to last season. Sophomore Stephanie Hawk is the early season individual leader with 11 blocks. The Bulldogs team record for blocked shots in a season is 118 set during the 2002-03 season. In addition to the two games with 12 blocks, Gonzaga has also had three other games with double-digit blocks with 11 against UC Riverside in 2003 and 10 against Illinois State (2000) and Central Washington (1989).
Stephanie Hawk dumped in a career-high 18 points against ASU including 14 in the second half. |

The first day of the tournament will be on Thursday, March 3 with the winners advancing to Saturday's semifinals. The championship game will be played on Sunday afternoon with the winner earning the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid. The last two seasons the WCC has held a weighted league tournament with the top two regular-season teams receiving byes into the semifinals. Gonzaga has benefitted from the previous format the last two seasons finishing second both years and starting tournament play in the semifinals. Last year the Bulldogs advanced to the WCC title game losing to Loyola Marymount 61-58.
BULLDOGS START NEW 3-STREAK: In the Bulldogs final home game in the Martin Centre, Gonzaga witnessed its consecutive game streak with a 3-pointer made come to an end against the University of San Francisco. That 0-for-6 performance against the Lady Dons ended a 222 game streak in which the Bulldogs had made at least one 3-pointer in a game. The streak started after the Bulldogs went 0-for-10 against the University of San Diego on Feb. 17, 1996. Gonzaga rebounded from that performance to knock down seven 3-pointers in each of its next two games to start a new streak which stands at 12 games. The Bulldogs record for 3-pointers made in a game is 14 against UC Riverside on Dec. 31, 2001. Gonzaga has recorded 16 games with 10 or more 3-pointers made since the 3-point basket was incorporated into the college game.
SCHRAMM TO REDSHIRT: Gonzaga freshman post player Sarah Schramm will redshirt the 2004-05 season after suffering a stress fracture in her hand during a recent Bulldogs practice. Schramm scored four points during the Bulldogs exhibition win over Lewis-Clark State and did not play against Utah Valley State.
PRESEASON FAVORITES: With five starters returning and back-to-back second place finishes in the WCC, the Gonzaga Bulldogs were selected as league favorites in a preseason poll of WCC coaches. Gonzaga received seven of eight first place votes and held a six-vote advantage over predicted runner-up Pepperdine University. The two league favorites will meet on Jan. 15 in Malibu, Calif., in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports Net.

The Bulldogs played their first regular-season game in the new building on Nov. 20, picking up a 87-41 victory over Utah Valley State College.
