LEWISTON, Idaho - Jamie Buterbaugh, Angela Fry and Katie Sanders all won their singles matches, but the Gonzaga University women's tennis team was unable to keep up as they fell to Lewis-Clark State College narrowly, 4-3. Gonzaga dropped to 3-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point easily as Kendall Bates paired with Sirrah Williams in the No. 2 spot and Leigh Orne teamed with Sanders to clinch the point. Despite the victory, Bates suffered an ankle injury during her doubles match and was forced to sit out the remainder of the match.
Singles play proved tough for Gonzaga as Connie Head stepped in for Bates. Buterbaugh lost her first singles match of the season, dropping to 4-1. Fry stepped up to win her match in three sets against Carla Jones (6-1, 2-6, 6-4) and Sanders won her match in straight sets over Ana Cornea (6-2, 6-3), but Lewis-Clark held the advantage.
The Bulldogs return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 8 a.m. when they take on Linfield College in Lewiston, Idaho.
