Men's Golf Eighth At Cal Poly Tournament

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's golf team opened play at the 2004 Cal Poly Fidelity National Title Tournament with a team-score of 305 and then bettered that effort by two strokes in the afternoon round as the Bulldogs posted a first-day total of 608 to sit in eighth place in the 15 team field. Gonzaga trails Loyola Marymount University by two strokes for sixth place and UC Santa Barbara by one stroke for seventh. Saint Mary's College leads the event with a score of 575.

In individual play John Chirila of Saint Mary's College posted rounds of 72 and 69 to hold a one-stroke advantage over Brendan Steele of UC Riverside. Steele went out in the first round with a 79 but shot an amazing 63 in the afternoon to move into second place overall.

Gonzaga was led by senior Souta Nozaka who fired back-to-back rounds of 74 to move into a four way tie for 13th. Matt Munroe (77-74) is three strokes behind Nozaka in a six-man log jam at 24th. Jimmy Hayes carded a two-round total of 153 (74-79) to move into a tie for 33rd with Ryan Fritz the fourth place GU golfer sitting at 43rd with rounds of 80 and 76. Ryan Miller finished 69th after rounds of 81 and 84 for the Zags.

Play concludes Friday morning at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif., with 18 more holes on the Par 72 - 6,803 yard course.
