Men's Tennis Falls To UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis swept the opening doubles matches then took four of six singles matches as it defeated Gonzaga 5-2 in a men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at Hickey Courts. The Bulldogs won the top two singles points with Bryce Cooper and Dru Ernst each collecting wins. Brett Womack nearly made it three wins in the top three slots as he fell in three sets in the number three singles action. With the win UC Davis wins its second match of the season against Gonzaga.

Play began with doubles and the Aggies wasted no time taking the lead. Freshmen brothers Casey and Kyle McMakin earned the first win with an 8-3 victory over Robert Penney and Jesse Goldsmith, 8-3, at No.3. Bastian Bartels and Michael Chin then defeated Brett Womack and Reid Arthur, 8-4 at No.2 while the battle at the top position also went the Aggies' way as Ross Barasch and Jayce Fitch defeated Bryce Cooper and Dru Ernst, 8-6.

In singles play, UC Davis quickly clinched the match as Casey McMakin at No.5 defeated Penney, 6-2, 6-0, and Blake Roberts defeated Goldsmith, 6-2, 6-3 at No.6.

Gonzaga earned its two points at the top of the lineup when Cooper posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Fitch at No.1 and Ernst captured two close sets in defeating Chin, 6-4, 6-4. The Aggies closed out the match as Barasch defeated Arthur, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No.4 and Robert Wong rallied after dropping the second set to defeat Womack, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0.

Gonzaga drops to 4-7 on the season while UC Davis improved to 6-7 overall. Gonzaga continues its spring break swing through California with matches against West Coast Conference foes San Francisco and Saint Mary's on Monday and Tuesday.
