Men's Tennis Defeated In First Round Of WCC Championship

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 1 seed Pepperdine University swept the Gonzaga University men's tennis team, 5-0, during the first day of the West Coast Conference Championships in Santa Clara, Calif., on Friday morning. The Bulldogs dropped to 6-18 this season and will take on No. 5 University of San Francisco in a second round match on Saturday, April 24 at 9:00 a.m.
Pepperdine took the doubles point early, as Calle Hansen and Kevin Borzenski defeated Dru Ernst and Reid Arthur, 8-2, and Pedro Rico and Alexis Rafidison defeated Robert Penney and Jesse Goldsmith, 8-1. According to tournament rules, 46th-ranked Scott Doerner and Alexandre Herrera did not finish their match against Bulldogs Bryce Cooper and Brett Womack since the point had already been clinched.
Singles play favored the Waves as well. Rico, ranked No. 21 in the nation, defeated Cooper in the No. 1 spot (6-0, 6-1), while Herrera defeated freshman Womack (6-4, 6-3). Richard Johnson claimed victory over Penney (6-1, 6-2) and Rafidison defeated Goldsmith (6-2, 6-0) for the Pepperdine win. Ernst and Arthur did not finish their matches.
