WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (7-3-0) continues its string of five matches away from the friendly confines of Martin Field this weekend as the Zags head to the Beaver state for a pair of Pacific-10 contests. Gonzaga, which has won four of its last five matches, travels to Oregon State University for a 3 p.m. match against the Beavers on Friday. The Bulldogs then travel to Eugene, Ore. for a 1 p.m. match with the University of Oregon Ducks on Sunday.
Miscellany: Gonzaga university is 0-10-0 all-time versus Oregon State University with the Beavers taking the last meeting 2-0 at OSU...GU is 1-2-1 all-time against the University of Oregon with the Zags claiming the last meeting 1-0 in 2002...the Bulldogs four-match win streak was the second longest in program history trailing only the five-match win streak set in 2003....Gonzaga has yet to lose consecutive matches...the Zags have been outshot by their opponents 130-113, but have outscored their opponents 19-5...GU also has a slight advantage in corner kicks 47-43...the Bulldogs 19 goals are third most among West Coast Conference schools.
LAST TIME OUT: Gonzaga University opened its longest road trip of the season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the University of Montana. After falling behind early the Zags rallied in the second half as freshman forward Heather Horn slipped behind the Grizzlies defense and controlled a pass from Jamie Blanche to even the score at one goal apiece. Six minutes later senior striker Annie Hawkins launched a rocket from the left wing which hit the hands of the UM keeper and rolled into the goal. Gonzaga's four-match win streak was halted on Sunday by the University of Hawaii as the Rainbow Wahine handed GU a 3-0 shutout.
FORWARDS GETTING HOT: Gonzaga University's leading scorer is senior forward Annie Hawkins. She has five goals and two assists for 12 points. During Gonzaga's four-match win streak Hawkins found the net four times, one of them a game winner. Freshman striker Heather Horn has also been hot as of late. Horn has recorded one goal in three of the last four matches. She has also added two assists to give her a total of eight points.
OFF TO A GREAT START: Gonzaga University is off to its best start in program history at 7-3-0. The past two seasons the Zags have recorded 18 wins surpassing the amount of wins the program had over the previous four seasons combined.
INSIDE THE RECORD BOOK: Senior forward Annie Hawkins ranks second all-time in several career statistics; goals scored 24, assists nine, total points 57 and shots with 143. Classmate Walker Loseno has notched her mark in Gonzaga University's all-time career records as well. She is tied for fourth in assists with eight, fifth in shot attempts at 83 and ranks fifth in goals scored with 11. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen ranks first all-time in shutouts with 12 and second in fewest goals allowed with 70.
A WCC SURPRISE: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has caught the attention of the West Coast Conference with its seven wins. GU was picked to finish seventh in the WCC preseason poll. Currently the Zags have the second most amount of wins in the WCC, trailing Saint Mary's College and No. 16 University of Portland who each have eight wins.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: The Oregon State University Beavers enter the week with a 5-4-0 overall record after dropping two matches this past weekend to WCC foes Loyola Marymount University and the University of San Francisco. OSU is 0-3 versus the West Coast Conference this season. OSU's offensive production is led by freshman striker Jodie Taylor as she has recorded nine goals and one assist for 19 points. Sophomore Melissa Onstad has the starting duties in the net for the Beavers and is posting a 1.14 goals-against-average and 28 saves. Oregon State has outshot its opponents 107-104 and out scored its opponents 15-13.
SCOUTING THE DUCKS: The University of Oregon Ducks enter the week with a 1-6-1 overall record and are currently on a five-match losing streak. The Ducks will host the University of Wyoming in a non-conference match on Friday before Gonzaga University comes to Eugene, Ore. for the Ducks last non-conference match of the 2004 season. Senior defender Christina Mintz leads the offensive charge for Oregon as she has recorded two goals for four points. Junior Lainez Domenique has the duties of starting keeper posting a 2.14 goals-against-average and has made 45 saves.
MEET THE COACH: The first female head women's soccer coach in the history of the West Coast Conference, Shannon Stiles enters her sixth season at Gonzaga with the program coming off the most successful season in school history. The Bulldogs posted their first winning season in school history with an 11-8-0 record and a 3-4-0 mark in WCC play. The three wins in WCC play surpassed the previous total of two conference wins Gonzaga had collected during 10 previous seasons of WCC play. For her efforts Stiles was named WCC Coach of the Year. Her overall record as a collegiate head coach is 34-67-2, making her the winningest coach in program history.
