SPOKANE, Wash. - In a game Gonzaga University women's basketball coach described as ugly, it was the Bulldogs who were able to fight through and pick up a big West Coast Conference win handing Loyola Marymount University a 53-43 defeat at the McCarthey Athletic Center. With the win Gonzaga moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with LMU at 8-3. GU improved to 13-13 overall while LMU dropped to 14-10. Both schools are one game behind Santa Clara University with three WCC games remaining.
Both teams combined to hit 15-of-60 shots in the first half as LMU led 21-19 at the half. The Lions opened the game with an 8-0 run as Amanda Patton and Jenni Smith both drained 3-pointers. LMU would go scoreless for the next 10:41 but Gonzaga could only score 14 points over the same stretch to lead 14-8 at the 5:08 mark. Dominique Harris and Katy Ridenour each had a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs during the run.
The teams traded baskets to end the half as Bianca Zeimann scored five of the last seven LMU points to give the Lions the two-point halftime edge. Ziemann had 9 first half points. Ashley Anderson and Stephanie Hawk each had six first half points for GU.
LMU's shooting woes continued in the second half as they failed to score a basket until the 8:35 mark of the second half as Valerie Ogoke hit a lay-up. LMU did score five points over that span from the free throw line.
Gonzaga pushed their lead out to 33-26 over that same time frame as Anderson scored eight points to lead all scorers with 18 in the game. She just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds. Hawk did have a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Harris added 11 hitting 6-of-10 free throws over the final three minutes to help Gonzaga ice the game.
Ziemann led LMU with 13 points while Patton finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ashlee Dunlap also hauled in 13 boards for the Lions.
Gonzaga will host Pepperdine University on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center in the Bulldogs final regular-season home game this season. GU will honor seniors Ashley Anderson, Anne Bailey, Juliann Laney and Katie Prichard prior to the game with the Waves.
