SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga University (10-13, 5-3 WCC) freshman Jami Bjorklund scored a career-high 20 points on Thursday night but it was not enough to help the Bulldogs overcome their road woes as Gonzaga fell to Santa Clara University, 74-52. With the win Santa Clara (12-9, 6-2 WCC) splits the season series and moves into sole possession of second place in the West Coast Conference standings.
Gonzaga led 27-26 with 2:30 remaining in the first half as Bjorklund scored 15 first-half points. Santa Clara scored the final four points of the half and jumped on the back of Michelle Cozad in the second half to bust open the game with a 19-6 run. Cozad scored 11 of the Broncos 19 points during the decisive run that handed Gonzaga its ninth road loss of the year. Cozad finished with a team-high 16 points.
The Bulldogs were led by Bjorklund's 20 points as the Spokane native hit 9-of-13 from the floor. Gonzaga won the battle on the boards and was respectable in shooting 41 percent from the floor, but the Zags could not find another player to compliment Bjorklund's effort. Ashley Anderson added 9 points and 11 rebounds as she just missed her sixth double-double of the league season. Gonzaga did have 25 turnovers compared to just 13 committed by Santa Clara.
Anna Martin and Tracey Walker each finished in double figures for the Broncos. Martin had 15 while Walker chipped in with 13.
Gonzaga returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a game at Saint Mary's College.
