SAN DIEGO - For the second time in three years the Gonzaga University men's varsity crew has won the Cal Cup Petite Final at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Bulldogs also won the event in 2004. Gonzaga raced in the Petite Final based on its third place finish in Saturday's heat racing on the 2,000 meter Mission Bay Course. Gonzaga has been one of the top Cal Cup contenders over the past four seasons winning the Grand Final in 2003, the Petite Final in 2004 and 2006 and finishing third at last year's Grand Final.
The Bulldogs rowed a strong piece picking up a three-second win over Washington State University. Gonzaga crossed at 6:05.50 with the Cougars varsity 8+ coming in at 6:08.91. The University of Texas was third at 6:11.25 with the University of Notre Dame 4th, Rollins College 5th and UC Santa Barbara 6th.
Gonzaga's men will host Western Washington University next Saturday morning at Silver Lake in the annual Blue Cup Regatta. The University of Puget Sound will also come to Spokane next Saturday for racing action.
