Men's Crew Wins Blue Cup

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -Gonzaga University men's varsity crew won its fourth straight Blue Cup Regatta over Western Washington as the Bulldogs won all five races they entered at the 2,000 meter Silver Lake course. Rowers faced several different racing conditions throughout the morning as the first two races were contested on calm water with a minimal tail wind. As the morning progressed the tail wind stiffened and a slight rain started to fall for the final two races.
Gonzaga's varsity 8+ made a strong push with 500 meters remaining in the race as the Bulldogs won by five seats to cruise in with a time of 6:11.2. Western Washington's varsity 8+ crossed a little over two-seconds later at 6:13.5. The varsity 8+ Blue Cup race was the second race of the morning.
The first race of the day was the men's novice 4+. Gonzaga's boat easily covered the course in a time of 7:04.4 with Puget Sound trailing at 7:56.0
The third race of the morning was the men's novice 8+ featuring Gonzaga and Western Washington. Gonzaga's two boats finished first and second with the top novice boat posting a time of 6:12.7. The second Bulldog boat was in at 6:30.0 followed by WWU at 6:47.1.
The fourth race was the men's varsity four contested between WWU, UPS and Lewis and Clark College. WWU won at 6:41.7 with UPS in at 6:48.9 and LC in at 6:58.46.
The men's novice 8+ race between Gonzaga and Puget Sound was raced with a slight rain covering the course. Gonzaga lost an oar in its boat 400 meters into the race but still was able to post a time of 6:50.4. UPS crossed at 7:03.8.
The final race of the morning had a stiff tail wind and slight rain for the men's varsity 8+. Gonzaga again made a charge with 500 meters left to win by three seconds. GU was in at 5:58. UPS edged Lewis and Clark by a nose taking second with a time of 6:01.0 and LC was in at 6:01.2. Gonzaga's junior varsity 8+ comprised of novice rowers was fourth at 6:04.1.
