SPOKANE, Wash. - Playing in its school-record fourth double-overtime match in its past six matches, the Gonzaga University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Loyola Marymount University at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
LMU (7-5-3, 2-1-0 WCC) outshot Gonzaga (5-9-2, 0-3-0 WCC) 10-8 in the match including 3-1 in the two overtime periods. The Bulldogs have gone 1-1-2 in double overtime matches this season and tied the school-record for the most double-overtime sessions played in a season with the 2005 and 2007 team. Prior to the addition of the second overtime period, the 1996 squad played in six matches that went into overtime.
Junior Christi D'Agostino put an end to the Zags four-match scoreless streak just over 16 minutes into the match as she took a long pass from sophomore Catherine Cullen into the LMU zone and headed one into the left corner for the early score. D'Agostino's second score of the season ended the Bulldogs' scoreless streak at 416 minutes. GU's first goal since sophomore Sheridan Jones gave the Zags a double overtime win over Eastern Washington University Sept. 28.
The Lions answered just over three minutes later as LMU's Julie Gallaudet sent a cross from the right side of the 18 into the keeper box. Gonzaga sophomore keeper Lauren Ames was unable to get a solid hand on the ball in an attempt to clear and Erin Rementer came away with the ball after a group of players held Ames out of the box and Rementer kicked into an empty net to tie the match at 1-1.
The Zags put together a few nice offensive attacks early in the second half as freshmen Sarah Rhodes and Courtney each fired shots from along the right side of the 18 but LMU keeper Allyssa Clark made a couple of nice saves to keep it at 1-1. Senior Lauren Dascenzo had maybe the best look for the Bulldogs in the second half as her header off of a Jones left cross went just wide left.
LMU picked up the match-winner 2:12 into the final overtime session as Lily Sorentino's left cross from just inside the 18 was headed to Kristen Garcia by Gallaudet and from 10 yards out Garcia headed the match-winner into the right corner.
Ames made four saves for the Zags and Clark made two for the Lions.
Gonzaga hits the road next week, facing Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. Friday and the University of San Francisco Sunday.
