Zags Swept by Nationally Ranked San Diego in WCC Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team opened the West Cost Conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 setback at the University of San Diego, who is currently ranked 16th in the latest AVCA Top-25 poll, on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. The Toreros, who improved their record to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in the WCC, swept the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-14. With the loss the Bulldogs fell to 6-10 on the season and 0-1 in conference.
Senior Elaina Renius, junior Emily Johnson and Michelle Boevers were the only three Zags to finish the match with five or more kills. Renius led the way with nine kills, while Johnson and Boevers each added six.
Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel dished out 24 assists as GU closed out the match with a mere 27 total team kills and a .190 hitting percentage. Van de Mortel also added two digs and three block assists in the loss.
Despite the three-set loss, Gonzaga did hold a 6-5 edge in blocks and were equal in digs with San Diego; each team collecting 33. Sophomore Cailtin Cozad and Renius had a hand in two Bulldog blocks, while Boevers blocked one USD kill attempt. Johnson had the Zag high in digs, finishing with nine. Senior Paige Dillingham and sophomore Allyson Powell contributed six digs each.
The nationally ranked Toreros had two players finish the match with double-figure digs, including Ali Troost who posted a match-high 11 kills. Also in double-digit kills was Amy DeGroot, who registered a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Jessica Nyrop passed out a match-high 37 assists as San Diego closed out the match with 44 total team kills and a .252 attacking clip.
Gonzaga will look to earn its first WCC win of the season when it plays at the University of San Francisco this Saturday, Oct. 4. Match time is set to begin at 1 p.m.
