Women's Volleyball Sweeps Seattle University

SPOKANE, Wash. - Playing in its final non-conference match of the season, the Gonzaga University women's volleyball squad broke a seven-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Seattle University Wednesday evening at the Martin Centre. The Bulldogs earned the easy win 25-17, 25-19, 25-22. With the victory GU improved to 7-16 overall, while the Redhawks fell to 9-16 on the season.
It was the senior tandem of Elaina Renius and Paige Dillingham that helped lead Gonzaga to the much-needed victory. Renius was on fire offensively for the Bulldogs, connecting on 11 of 14 attack attempts, with only one attack error, for a smoking .714 hitting percentage. Renius, who leads the West Coast Conference in total blocks, also added two blocks and three digs in the victory.
Dillingham was all over the floor defensively for the Zags, finishing with a match-high 15 digs; her 17th double-figure dig performance of the season.
Gonzaga finished the match with 13 more kills than Seattle, connecting on 37 attempts for a .259 attacking percentage. Besides Renius, Michelle Boevers added offense for GU with a match-high 13 kills and a .458 hitting clip.
Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel was a steady influence on the Bulldogs, dishing out 34 assists, collecting five blocks and making three digs.
Along with kills, Gonzaga also had the edge in blocks (12-6) and digs (36-22). Cristin Richards was the only Seattle player to finish with more than five kills; collecting seven on the night. Libby Graff added seven, while Janet Beckerman and Jordan Keller both had two apiece.
Gonzaga will resume West Coast Conference action this Saturday, Oct. 25 when it plays at the University of Portland. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
