SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team honored seniors Paige Dillingham, Elaina Renius and Tianna Tuatagaloa Saturday afternoon but the Bulldogs fell short in their effort to send them out with a win as the University of Portland earned a 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 18-25, 52-23) West Coast Conference victory at the Martin Centre.
Gonzaga's season ends with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the WCC. The Pilots earned their first WCC victory with the win and finish their season at 7-23 overall and 1-13 in conference.
Renius collected 13 kills, one solo block and one block assist in the loss. The 13 kills bumped her over the 1,000 kill plateau for her career. The middle block has 1,001 kills to her credit; just the 11th player to join the exclusive 1,000 kill club. Renius also finished the season with 39 solo blocks, one shy of tying the single-season Zag record of 40 set by Lisa Petticord in 1988.
Dillingham led the way defensively with a match-high 16 digs. The libero, who closed out the season with 417 digs, had double-digit digs in 23 of the 31 Gonzaga matches. Dillingham also had two assists in the match.
Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel dished out 37 assists as the Bulldogs finished the match with 47 kills and hitting .184. Van de Mortel also collected 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the year.
Junior Michelle Boevers and classmate Layne Brosky both added 10 kills in the setback.
The Pilots were led by Jessica Clemens and K.C. Fox with 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Kaylyn Jones passed out 53 assists as Portland had 60 kills, 13 more than GU, and a .271 attacking clip.
