SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team opens its fall season co-hosting the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga University Classic held in Cheney, Wash. this weekend.
The Bulldogs return six players off of a team that posted a 10-win season in 2009. Senior Roman Dojcak and junior Conor Feeney return as the leaders of a young Zag squad that has had a couple great weeks of practice. Both Dojcak and Feeney earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors in 2008.
"We are very excited about the group we have coming back this year," stated fifth year head coach Peter MacDonald. "We had some young players gain a lot of experience last season and with the return of Conor and Roman, I feel that those two proven veterans will provide great leadership for a very talented group of young players this year."
Heading that group of returners is a pair of sophomores in Jake Davis and Scott Sullivan who each posted 10-win seasons in their freshman campaign. Davis finished with a team-best 13 singles wins while Sullivan recorded 12 singles victories. Redshirt junior Zach Peach also returns after closing out last season with three consecutive singles wins while redshirt freshman Tyler Campbell is looking to return to the form that saw him vying for one of the Zags top singles spots last fall prior to missing most of this past spring season due to injuries.
The lone newcomer to the Bulldogs is highly touted freshman Levin Guillermo out of southern California who joins the Zags as one of the nation's top prospects after he produced a number of impressive United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournament victories over the past couple years.
"I am really looking forward to seeing this group get out and compete against some of the top teams in our region this weekend," commented MacDonald. "Every one of our guys has come back playing at a higher level than we finished at last season and we are looking to build off a very good couple weeks of practice."
After this weekend's tournament the Bulldogs will take part in the ITA Regionals in Berkley, Calif. Oct. 23-27 and the PNW Intercollegiate in Seattle, Wash. Nov. 6-8.
