SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head men's golf coach Robert Gray has signed a local product in Lewis and Clark High senior Peter Gullickson to join the Bulldogs next fall.
He was a first-team All-Greater Spokane League pick as a sophomore in 2008 was a second-team selection last spring. He was a State qualifier as a freshman and sophomore. He won the Inland Empire High School Golf Tournament with a 1-under par 71 at Spokane Country Club last April. He will earn his fourth varsity letter this spring for coach Jim Travis.
In October of this year he tied for ninth at the Purdue Open played at Purdue University's Kampen Course, one of the events on the Future Collegians World Tour. He shot a 78-75 for 153, seven strokes off the lead. This past August he placed sixth at the American Junior Golf Association tournament at Wenatchee Country Club with a 1-over par 217 and tied for fifth at the Stockton Sports Commission Junior Classic AJGA with another 1-over par 217 that included a final-round 69.
He competed in the Junior Worlds at Torrey Pines Golf Course this past July, finishing in a tie for 30th. He was also a Junior America's Cup member of Team Washington this past summer.
"We're really excited to have Peter join us. This summer was his first summer of playing in strong competition. After he got a few of those events under his belt, he showed what he's capable of doing with his sixth and fifth place finishes in his final two AJGA events," Gray said.
While golf is his sport, he comes from a family of tennis players. His mother, Catherine, and sister Anna played collegiately at the University of Portland, and brother Benjamin played at the College of William and Mary.
Gray said Gullickson being from an athletic family has helped his development.
"Coming from a very athletic family, he has a ton of natural athletic ability. He has a very natural swing and solid short game. He's going to see a lot of playing time right away and we're looking forward to him making an immediate impact on the continued growth of our program," Gray said.
In the classroom he carries a 3.4 GPA.
