Volleyball Ends Season With 3-0 Setback At San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball squad ended the 2009 season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 West Coast Conference loss at the University of San Diego. The Bulldogs lost the match 20-25, 19-25, 11-25 to the Toreros. With the setback, Gonzaga finishes the season with a 10-18 overall mark and a 5-9 record in the WCC. The 5-9 mark places the Zags in sixth place in the WCC; the first time since then2001 season Gonzaga has finished higher than seventh.
Senior Michelle Boevers led the Gonzaga offense with nine kills while classmate Layne Broksy added six. The two seniors finished with 15 of the Bulldogs 24 kills. Freshman Terran Poindexter chipped in four, sophomore Kaprina Goodwin had three and both junior Caitlin Cozad and sophomore Denise Van de Mortel finished with one. Gonzaga combined for a tough .067 team attack percentage with a team-high .132 clip during the second set.
Defensively, sophomore Allyson Powell had a 13 digs and Van de Mortel finished with eight to each lead the Bulldogs. Both Brosky and Goodwin had two blocks in the match.
San Diego (18-7, 10-4 WCC) was more effective on offense, finishing with 44 team kills and a .223 team hitting percentage. Ali Troost led the Toreros attack with a match-high 14 kills while Carrie Baird had 12. Troost was the only player to finish with a double-double, adding 11 digs to her 14 kills. Kayleen Webster led USD defensively with a match-high 14 digs.
San Diego held the 48-34 advantage in digs and held the slight 8-4 edge in total blocks. The Toreros did serve up six aces to the Zags one.
Boevers closes out her career fifth on the all-time record books in kills with 1,231 - only the 11th Zag to tally 1,000 or more kills in their career. She also finishes with 288 digs, 206 blocks and 63 service aces. Broksy ends her career with 928 total kills, 219 blocks and 193 digs, while Emily Johnson has 606 kills, 475 digs, 115 blocks and 44 service aces during her four-year career.
