Lantta's First Career Win Gives Zags Win Over Montana

SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman Sophie Lantta won her number five singles match to clinch a 4-3 win for Gonzaga University over the University of Montana in a non-conference match at the Spokane Racquet Club Saturday night.
After dropping the doubles point, the Zags won four of the six singles matches to improve their record to 4-3 on the season.
Playing without top singles player senior Aglaya Kokurina, who was out with an injury, the Bulldogs had three players post wins while playing out of their normal spots in the singles rotation. Sophomore Rika Mehndiratta, the Zags regular number two singles player, won at number one singles, Freshmen Kristina Zauere, the regular number three singles player, won her number two singles match to record her team-leading sixth singles victory of the season and sophomore Clare Dodge, the regular number four singles player, posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at number three singles.
With the Zags needing just one point to clinch the match, Lantta beat Kayla Moyse 6-4, 6-1 to record her first career win.
"I was very pleased with how we played today," stated head coach D.J. Gurule. "We did a great job of rebounding after losing the doubles point. Rika, Kristina and Clare really stepped up and played well today, as did Sophie. It was good to see her play well in her first collegiate match. I am very proud of our team's energy and effort throughout the day."
Gonzaga closes out its three-match homestand against Lewis & Clark State College March 7.
