COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team began its spring season on rocky water, literally. The Bulldogs, hosting UC San Diego Saturday, moved their dual to Mica Bay on Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho due to inclement weather all week in the Spokane area. The Zags won all three races over Tritons, despite the choppy water.
The Varsity 8+ race saw the Bulldogs take a one second victory over the Tritons. The water in the Varsity 8+ race was choppy, with a quartering tail wind in the first 250 meters, before flattening out the rest of the way. Gonzaga crossed the finish line in a time of 6:15.1, with UC San Diego following at 6:16.2.
The Bulldog Freshman 8+ also secured a victory, despite a few hiccups during the race. Gonzaga and UC San Diego were dead even the first 1,000-meters, but then a clash occurred as the Zag coxswain encroached on the Tritons water. UC San Diego has to stop and start again. GU finished the race with a time of 6:38.3 and UC San Diego was clocked in at 6:42.4. The water was again choppy, with a quartering tail wind in the first 250 meters, before flattening out the rest of the way.
Because of ice floating into the race course, the Junior Varsity 8+ race turned into a six-minute timed piece. The Zags earned the victory by a length and three-quarters.
