LIHUE, Kaua'i - Senior Kyle Huus and sophomore Travis Johnsen each shot even-par 72 Sunday as Gonzaga University's men's golf team is in third place after 18 holes of the third annual Kaua'i Invitational at the 6,954-yard Puakea Golf Course.
The Bulldogs shot a 295, while fellow West Coast Conference foe University of San Diego holds the first-day lead at 281 for a 5-stroke lead over the University of British Columbia. USD is the two-time defending champion. Gonzaga is one shot ahead of Seattle University and two shots ahead of the University of Texas-San Antonio.
USD's Gunner Wiebe is the individual leader after an opening-round 66 for a 5-shot lead over six others, including a trio of UBC golfers.
Huus and Johnsen are tied for eighth.
Francis Santiago shot a 75 for the Bulldogs, Oliver Grabb shot 76 and Peter Gullickson had an 80.
The 54-hole tournament will continue Monday with the second round and conclude with Tuesday's final 18 holes.
