Chong Advances After Rain Delay At Boise State Fall Classic

BOISE, Idaho - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began the first day of the Boise State University Fall Classic Friday after rain delayed the start of the tournament. But at the end of the day, junior Zhia Hwa Chong advanced to the third round of the Blue Flight main singles draw.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Chong defeated the University of Idaho's Alex Joitoiu 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 to advance to Saturday's third round match against second seed Lance Wilhelm of the Air Force Academy. In the same draw, senior Kevin Eischen earned an opening round victory over the University of Portland's Jackson Martin 6-0, 6-3. But the Paris, France, native fell to top seed Marius Cirstea of the Vandals 6-1, 6-3 in the next round.
In the Orange Flight main doubles draw, Eischen and newcomer Pablo Mosquera Pérez earned an 8-4 opening round victory over Montana State University's Kenny Dodd and Lander Jewett to advance to Saturday's second round match. In the singles draw, junior Scott Sullivan rebounded after losing to first set and defeated Portland's Aaron Horwath 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. Eastern Washington University's Flavio Malagutti 6-4 eliminated Sullivan in the next round. 6-1.
The tournament resumes play Saturday.
