Zags Run Away With Exhibition Win; Defeat Western Oregon

SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Katelan Redmon scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half and freshman Jazmine Redmon scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half to help No. 22 Gonzaga University women's basketball to an easy 115-51 exhibition victory over Western Oregon University Saturday afternoon at the McCarthey Athletic Center in front of 2,594 Bulldog faithful.
Katelan Redmon hit 6-of-9 from the field, sank her lone 3-point attempt, made 3-of-4 free throws, grabbed five rebounds, four offensive, had one assist and blocked one shot. Jazmine Redmon, who is not related to Katelan but both are from Spokane, went 6-for-8 from the floor, had two rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in the lopsided victory.
Senior point guard Courtney Vandersloot chipped in 13 points for the Zags, who finished with five players in double-digits. Vandersloot, playing 18 minutes, also dished out seven assists, blocked two shots and made two steals.
Danielle Bellando and Sara Zahler combined for 22 of the Division II Wolves 51 points.
The game was never in doubt for Gonzaga, who is looking to win its seventh-straight West Coast Conference title this season, as it ran out to a 19-2 lead just seven minutes into the contest.
Eight Bulldogs scored in the opening 10 minutes, starting with forward Kayla Standish, who opened the contest with back-to-back buckets. Senior point guard Tatri Lorenzo was the eighth Zag to score, giving GU the 31-8 lead on a fast break layup after she stole the ball at midcourt.
Western Oregon wouldn't hit double-digits until the 8:47 mark of the opening half when Zahler hit a 3-pointer to make the score 31-11.
The Zags closed out the first half on a 16-0 run, started off on a jumper by Katelan Redmon, with an assist by freshman Stephanie Golden, at the 4:40 mark and was ended on another layup by Lorenzo with three seconds to play. GU went into half up 57-18.
The second half was as fast pace as the first with the Bulldogs scoring 18 points in the first four minutes to push their lead to 75-24. Standish was the one to push GU's lead above 50 with an inside the paint jumper at 15:32.
Jazmine Redmon gave GU its 100th point on a layup at the 4:33 mark. Gonzaga's largest lead of the contest was 66 when Lorenzo hit 3-pointer to up the score to 115-49.
Eleven of the 13 Bulldogs who played scored in the game. Standish had the lone double-double of the contest, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds; five of which were offensive.
Fan favorite Carter Schick, a senior, scored five points and grabbed three rebounds.
"It was a total team performance today," stated eleventh year head coach Kelly Graves after the game. "Everyone executed and it was great for all our players to get substantial minutes this afternoon. Jazmine did a solid job for her first time under the lights, was fantastic for us both offensively and defensively."
Gonzaga finished the contest hitting 60.0 percent from the field (45-of-75). It scored 52 points in the paint, 34 points off Western Oregon's 25 turnovers and its bench scored 57 points, seven more than the Wolves scored total.
The Bulldogs also held the 50-19 rebounding advantage.
The Zags open regular season play at the University of Southern California Friday. The game is set for 1 p.m.
