PORTLAND, Ore. - Clare Dodge won at No. 5 singles to clinch a 4-3 win for Gonzaga University over the University of Portland in a West Coast Conference match Friday afternoon.
In a very balanced match the Bulldogs (9-4, 1-2 WCC) came out on the winning end by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the match's first point. The Zags No. 3 doubles tandem of Sophie Lantta and Jackie Tabb played one of the best matches of the season, winning a 9-8 decision to clinch the point for Gonzaga.
In singles play each team had three players post wins, allowing the Bulldogs to pick the win after earning the doubles point. Prue Teitzel won at No. 3 singles in straight sets to record her team-leading ninth win of the season. Lantta later earned a win at No. 6 singles due to a Pilot injury and Clare Dodge came through for the clincher with a 6-2, 6-2 win for the Zags.
"It was great to get a good conference win against a tough Portland team today," stated head coach D.J. Gurule. "Everybody played very well. Prue continues to play solid tennis for us. I am very pleased with how we played today. Always feels good to get a win in conference."
The Zags continue play in Portland with a non-conference match against Portland State University Saturday.
