Seven Zags Advance In Second Day Of EWU/GU Classic

CHENEY, Wash. - On the second day of the Eastern Washington University/Gonzaga University Classic held in Cheney, Wash., the men's tennis team saw seven student-athletes highlight the tournament Saturday.
In the main doubles draw, juniors Zhia Hwa Chong and Scott Sullivan picked up a pair of wins, defeating the University of Idaho's Kevin Lee and Abid Akbar 8-5 in the second round and Eastern Washington's Kyle Koetje and Louis Altameres 8-6 in the quarterfinals. It is the first time in head coach Peter MacDonald's six-year tenure that the Bulldogs have reached the semifinals in the main draw.
Before it enters the final day of the tournament Sunday, Gonzaga claimed the Flight B Singles back draw title. Freshman Ismath Muzeen and junior Tyler Campbell both earned their way to the championship match and will face each other to determine the winner.
Muzeen reached the finals defeating the in the quarterfinals the University of Idaho's Sam Lyons and University of Montana's Dylan Bell in the semifinals while Campbell topped the the Grizzlies' Ben DeMarois and Seattle University's Adam Strizich, respectively.
Two Bulldog duos picked up wins in the doubles back draw. Ismath and freshman Jack Schoebel defeated the Grizzlies' Zach Drost and Michael Facey 8-4 while senior Kevin Eischen and freshman Pablo Mosquera Pérez eliminated the Vandals' Jake Knox and Sam Lyons 8-5.
In the Flight B Singles main draw, junior Jake Davis dropped the quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-0 to the Eagles' Flavio Malagutti.
"Today was a great day for us," MacDonald said. "This year I have seven of nine guys in the draw heading into Sunday. That is always nice to see."
The Bulldogs conclude the tournament Sunday with Chong and Sullivan starting at 9 a.m. and Ismath versus Campbell at noon.
