MALIBU, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team put up a tough fight against fourth ranked Pepperdine University but unfortunately dropped a 1-0 decision to the Waves at TF Rokus Field Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs fell to 7-7-2 overall and 0-3-2 in West Coast Conference, while the Waves improved their unbeaten record to 12-0-4 and 4-0-0 in league with their ninth shutout of the season.
"We did not connect our passes and we got caught in to too much of a direct of a game," explained third year head coach Amy Edwards after the match. "We got away from our strength and then couple that with not enough energy for the full 90 minutes."
It took Pepperdine 77 minutes to finally crack Gonzaga's goal line. With a collision at the back post, the ball squirted up out of the melee and headed into the goal by Ally Holtz; her second tally of the season at 76:28.
"We didn't clear the ball out and Susan [Brown] got caught in the traffic and couldn't get to the ball," said Edwards of the anti-climactic goal.
Brown did finish the match with nine saves for Gonzaga.
The Bulldogs, who only had six shots on goal, had a great opportunity at the very end of the game when senior Katie Spangenberg got around her defender on the left side and served a ball into the box that found the foot of redshirt junior Emma Dolcetti. Dolcetti had a good touch on the ball but Wave keeper Roxanne Barker was there to make the save.
Gonzaga looks to stop its three-match losing skid when it welcomes No. 12 Santa Clara University to the Gonzaga Soccer Field Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will recognize their four seniors before the match begins.
