BAJA CALIFORNIA, Mexico - Gonzaga University sophomore Erik Krzyzanowski shot a 3-under par 68 Friday and the Bulldogs shot a 298 in the second round of the Cabo Collegiate at Club Campestre.
Krzyzanowski rebounded from an opening-round 79 and has a 36-hole score of 147 to leave him tied for 23rd heading into Saturday's final round.
Co-host University o Arkansas remains atop the leaderboard at 557 for an 18-stroke lead over Southeastern Louisiana University. Gonzaga moved up one spot to 10th at 608 after Friday's round of 298, the second lowest round of the fall for the Bulldogs.
"Erik played a great round of golf today. It's great to see him put it all together. His score was the difference in our team score from yesterday," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said.
Calmer winds also lowered the scores Friday from Thursday's wind-hampered opening round.
"The wind wasn't as strong as yesterday, but the pins were tough to get close to," Gray said. "The greens have some crazy slopes with small tiers and you had to hit really good approaches to have any chance at making a birdie. Erik was able to do that but the others weren't getting on those tiers and were left with a lot of tough putts."
Travis Johnsen shot a 75 Friday for a 36-hole total of 156, Brendan Connolly shot 77 to stand at 159 and Peter Gullickson had a 78 to go with Thursday's 75 for 153. James Fahy shot an 81 Friday and is at 156.
"We're still struggling with consistency down the lineup and that's been our Achilles heel all season. Tomorrow is our last chance to put it all together as a team before the end of the fall season," Gray noted.
Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas had his second straight 68 and is at 136 to take sole possession of the lead after 36 holes. He has a 2-shot lead over Ji Hwan Park of the University of San Francisco.
