Bulldogs Drop WCC Opener To Broncos

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to Santa Clara University in the Bulldogs' West Coast Conference season opener Saturday in Pullman, Wash. Junior Sophie Lantta led the Bulldogs to a pair of wins against the Broncos.
The Bulldogs (2-5, 0-1 WCC) won two of the three doubles matches to secure the point. Lantta and senior Jackie Tabb defeated Alex Zaniewski and Kacie Wagner 9-8 (5) at the No. 3 spot while senior Clare Dodge and junior Kristina Zauere beat Kelly Lamble and Kimmi Cox 8-4 at No. 2 to extend their winning streak to three.
"I was very pleased with our doubles play," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Clare and Kristina played very well and Sophie and Jackie really fought hard to pull out a close match to win the doubles point."
The Bulldogs couldn't carry the momentum they had in doubles into singles play. The Broncos (7-1, 2-0 WCC) won five singles matches but Lantta dominated Carolina O'Haren 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot to earn her seventh win of the 2010-11 season.
"Unfortunately we couldn't capitalize on that momentum," Gurule said. "They really set the tone to start out the singles matches and we were unable to battle back. Sophie played a great match at No. 6 and dominated from start to finish. I was very proud of Sophie. She did a great job of sticking to her game plan."
The Bulldogs return to the Spokane Racquet Club against the University of Montana Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
